Ten days. Six destinations. Savannah: check! Next stop: Charleston, South Carolina (said with a southern accent).

I wasn’t sure what to expect beyond moss-covered live oak trees, southern charm, and history—though I couldn’t tell you what kind. I didn’t research. I just went.

First Impressions

Driving into Charleston was beautiful, the water suddenly appearing as buildings rose against the skyline. Finding your bearings while navigating an unfamiliar city alone can be jarring. I didn’t know what to expect, where to park, or what to do first. After a quick Google search, I chose a parking garage, made my way through the narrow streets, and ate my pre-made salad on the roof while surveying the city from above.

Charleston’s architecture is ridiculously quaint and gives me all the cozy vibes. Taking in the salty harbor breeze, I weaved through streets reading placard after placard on historical homes. I don’t know what it is about colonial times that makes me feel warm inside (maybe it was reading and watching Little Women growing up), but Charleston definitely brought all the feels.

Exploring the City

The hours spent wandering Charleston flew by. The City Market was especially fun—a space extending several blocks filled with unique shops and booths to explore. One of my favorites was the Christmas booth, of course (I’m a BIG fan of Christmas), and another booth that sold Lord of the Ring coffee – two of my favorite things!

The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon was also a delightful stop. I wandered the dungeons that held both historically prominent and everyday figures during wars and America’s early days. The entire city is worth spending time in, and I look forward to returning.

An Unexpected Connection

But the most special time I spent in Charleston was with a young friend who had recently moved there on her own.

Having moved across the country myself, I know how lonely and challenging it can be—and I moved with my husband and kids! My friend made the move by herself. We chatted over delicious burgers, laughing and catching up on life. What a blessing it was to be a friendly face for her! Even more of a blessing to me, she opened her home and invited me to stay for the night.

A beautiful, unexpected surprise! The kindness of others once again touched my heart. God is so good and cares for His children, and I had already felt His care deeply on this trip. I’m so grateful for the time I spent with my friend and for the incredibly comfy couch, delicious hot coffee, and wonderful hot shower she gifted me.

Onward

The first two days of my road trip in beautiful, historical Southern cities had been captivating, but it was time to trade cobblestone streets for mountain trails and southern hospitality for wilderness solitude. Stay tuned for my next stop: Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains!
